It’s definitely too cold to skate outside here in the UK at the moment
But that’s ok, as it gives skaters time for some much needed skatenance.
1.
Bearing Maintenance
I’ll admit to being the world’s worst when it comes to bearing maintenance, I have one set of open bearings and they are my ceramics so they have to be cleaned occasionally. But not using them outside definitely reduces the need for cleaning. If you’re rolling zz bearings then, hooray! They don’t need cleaning. However, even if you’ve got zz bearings you can still pop the wheels off and check for those horrid hair donuts that like to weave their way around the axels.
If you do need to clean your bearings I have a video which will help you.
Also a video on bearings if you need more info
2.
Check For Cones
Not the traffic variety! Don’t forget to have a look at your wheels, it’s common for wheels to start to loose their edges, so they start to look a little like a cone. This usually happens on the front inner wheels, if that is happening then just swap those inner wheels with the ones that tend to get the least wear, the back outside.
Some wheels start off looking more rounded so make sure you know your wheel type.
3.
Safety First
Regularly checking your skates can be a great idea. But how? I tend to give my skates a shake. This really helps highlight any loose components. Should you hear a metallic clink when you give them a shake it could be a loose wheel, loose nut or a wobbly truck.
